PPE Bayreuth-Prague Double Degree MA Programme

PPE Bayreuth-Prague Double Degree: one curriculum, two degrees

Philosophy and Economics are fundamental pillars of an advanced analytical and quantitative training. However, to comprehend how political interests, ideologies, and international institutions shape our world, we need to develop an in-depth understanding of politics, government, international institutions and relations.

For those students who are keen to expand P&E in this direction, P&E Bayreuth offers an innovative and exclusive PPE double degree programme with the Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic). The double degree programme allows you to study at both universities and to obtain two degrees (Prague and Bayreuth) within the regular study time of the MA programme (4 semester). The student-intake for the double degree programme is governed by a competitive application (MA deadline: April 30). The Bayreuth-Prague double degree offers a unique possibility to study PPE in two different environments and to expand your academic, social and cultural experience beyond Bayreuth.

Double Degree MA

The structure of the PPE Bayreuth-Prague MA double degree is straightforward. MA students enrol in the P&E MA programme and apply for the double degree during their second semester (deadline: September 30th). They transfer to Charles University and enrol in the IEPS (International Economics & Political Studies) programme before the start of their 3rd semester (beginning of October).

Important: One requirement to be unconditionally accepted to the double degree programme is to pass the following P&E UBT courses and modules. The deadline for providing evidence for passing these courses and modules is the end of your first semester in Prague.

  • A1 Ethics
  • A2 Political Philosophy
  • A3 Philosophy of the Social Sciences
  • A4 Advanced Microeconomics I
  • A5 Advanced Macroeconomics I
  • A6 Advanced Empirical Economics Research I
  • C Electives (12 ECTS)

Can I join the MA double degree programme after the 4th semester?Hide

It is possible to apply after the 4th semester. However, please note that you will also be required to pass all courses at Charles University that are part of the double degree programme. Like all students who participate in the double degree programme, you will not be able to transfer credit from Bayreuth to Prague.

While in Prague, can I go abroad?Hide

In general, this is not recommended. You should qualify for the double degree by completing the assigned courses at Charles University.

Do I need to pay tuition fees to study at Charles University?Hide

Charles University charges tuition fees. However, as a Bayreuth P&E student, you are exempt from paying tuition fees. That is, you will have the privilege to study at Charles University without making a financial contribution.

I applied for the BA double degree programme and I was accepted conditionally. Why only “conditionally”?Hide

In order to complete the double degree programme successfully, you are required to pass a particular set of courses and modules at Bayreuth University and Charles University (see Double Degree MA above). These required courses follow the general study recommendation for the first two semesters of the P&E MA programme. However, if you are MA student, you will (usually) start your degree in Prague after the second semester, yet you will apply for the double degree programme with the results of only one semester of study. In consequence, to ensure that you have completed all necessary courses from P&E Bayreuth to qualify for the double degree programme, you will only be accepted to the double degree programme conditionally after your application. You will be accepted unconditionally to the double degree programme once you complete all necessary courses and modules form P&E Bayreuth. You will have time to show that you completed necessary courses and modules until the end of your first semester in Prague. (This will make in possible, for example, to retake an exam at Bayreuth while you study in Prague.) (Please note that if you do not fulfil this condition, you will not be able to participate in the double degree programme.)
