Seminars abroad
As a special feature, the P&E MA programme frequently offers integrative seminars on topics of philosophical as well as of economic relevance in cooperation with universities abroad, located in countries where these issues are of major importance.
In summer 2019, the MA Integrative Seminar will take our students to Ukraine:
Past integrative seminars abroad
2016: PPE Spring School (Mumbai)
Together with the J.S. Mill College VU Amsterdam, the Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research (IGIDR) in Mumbai, the P&E MA programme organized a Spring School on "Individual Choices and Collective Decisions." Students travelled to Mumbai with the financial support of PEMA (a whole-grain bread producer from the region) and the Wissenschaftsstiftung Oberfranken.
The Spring School consisted of three courses: "The Politics of Freedom", "Ethics of Public Policy" and "Collective Decision-Making".
2015: Beyond Sovereign Debt: A New Philosophy and Economics for Europe (Athens)
As part of its “University of the Future” funding initiative, the VolkswagenStiftung supported a research-led integrative seminar on the European sovereign debt crisis that was organized by the P&E MA programme and the Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences of the University of Athens.
The topic of this seminar has been the European sovereign debt crisis with special reference to Greece. It has been implemented in teams, comprising P&E students from Bayreuth and graduate students in political economy and political science from the University of Athens, and it dealt with questions like: “What are the origins of the Greek crisis?”, “Are the demands of the Troika justified?”, “What is a just financial system for Europe?”, “What economic responsibilities do European citizens owe to each other?”, or “How to legitimize economic policy in Europe?” all set against the scene of the Greek sovereign debt crisis.
